How can you use data to improve your learning?

Themes: education, data-driven decision making, & data collection and analysis

Background

Data-driven decisions take action based on verifiable data rather than relying on intuition or past experience. The success of the data-driven approach is reliant upon the quality of the data gathered and the effectiveness of its analysis and interpretation.

In education, we use data such as test scores, grades and dropout rates to help measure the success or failure of the system, but there are many more data points that can be collected, analyzed, and used to improve learning.

Project

Work alone or in teams to collect and analyze data to uncover factors that can influence learning, such as classroom seating arrangement, amount of sleep, student interest level, learning style, stress, etc.  Implement a change based on your analysis to improve learning.

The change may be put into action in your classroom, school, or at home.

Learning Objectives

  • Raise awareness on the data that can be collected and analyzed to gain insights on a problem

  • Practice collecting and analyzing data

  • Be able to differentiate between the concepts of correlation and causation

  • Take action based on data-driven findings
