Digital Divide

How can we make the Internet available to more people in the world?

Themes: digital divide, Internet access, & United Nations sustainable development goals

Background

More than half of the world's 7.5 billion people don’t have access to the Internet, with Asia and Africa having the lowest rates of access, according to a United Nations' report.

In 2015 Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg spoke to the United Nations and called for global leaders to treat Internet access as a basic human right, similar to access to healthcare or water.   He said, “Research shows that when you give people access to the Internet, one in ten people is lifted from poverty.”

The United Nations has set its sights on 17 sustainable development goals which they believe are the blueprint of a better and more sustainable future for all.

Project

Work in teams to create a presentation for the United Nations that proposes a solution for expanding Internet access as a means to help achieve one of the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals.
